What is a glucose test?
A glucose test measures the level of glucose, a type of sugar, in your blood. Glucose is the primary source of energy for your body’s cells. When you eat carbohydrates, they are broken down into glucose, which is then absorbed into your bloodstream.
Who is this test for?
Glucose tests are commonly used for:
- Diagnosing diabetes: High blood glucose levels can be a sign of diabetes.
- Monitoring diabetes: People with diabetes use glucose tests to track their blood sugar levels and manage their condition.
- Screening for prediabetes: A prediabetes diagnosis indicates that your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be considered diabetes.
- Checking for other health conditions: High or low blood sugar levels can sometimes indicate other health problems, such as liver disease or hormone disorders.
Outcome of the test:
The results of a glucose test are typically expressed in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or millimoles per liter (mmol/L). A normal fasting blood glucose level is generally considered to be between 70 and 100 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.6 mmol/L).
Preparation before taking the test:
The specific preparation for a glucose test may vary depending on the type of test being performed. However, most tests require fasting for a certain period before the blood sample is drawn. Your healthcare provider will provide you with specific instructions.
Types of glucose tests:
- Fasting blood sugar test: This test measures your blood glucose level after you have not eaten or drunk anything for at least 8 hours.
- Random blood sugar test: This test measures your blood glucose level at any time of day, regardless of when you last ate.
- Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT): This test measures your blood glucose levels before and after drinking a sugary drink.
If you have any concerns about your blood sugar levels or diabetes, please consult with your healthcare provider.
