Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

$55.99

What is this test?

The PSA test is a blood test used to measure the level of a protein called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is produced by the prostate gland, a small gland located below the bladder in men.

Who is this for?

This test is typically recommended for men over the age of 50. However, your doctor may suggest starting earlier if you have a family history of prostate cancer or other risk factors.

Benefits of this test:

  • Early detection: The PSA test can help detect prostate cancer at an early stage, when it is often easier to treat.
  • Monitoring treatment: If you have prostate cancer, regular PSA tests can help monitor the effectiveness of your treatment.
  • Identifying recurrence: A rising PSA level after treatment may indicate that the cancer is returning.

Preparation before getting tested:

  • Consult your doctor: Discuss your symptoms and reasons for wanting the test with your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid sexual activity: Refrain from sexual activity for at least 48 hours before the test, as this can temporarily raise PSA levels.
  • Follow fasting instructions: Your doctor may recommend fasting for a certain period before the blood draw.

Note: A high PSA level does not always mean you have prostate cancer. Other factors, such as prostate enlargement or inflammation, can also raise PSA levels. Your doctor will interpret the results of your PSA test in conjunction with other factors, such as your age, family history, and physical exam.
